If you're a regular reader here, you know that I have a penchant for tanning. I know, I know, I must be the devil incarnate because, heaven forbid, I am an adult and I make my own decision to tan. I also go to the most amazing tanning salon known to man (see the ad on the sidebar) which is owned and operated by not only a good friend, but a very well educated tanning consultant.
But I decided the only fair way for me to continue extolling the virtues of bed tanning would be to try out some self-tanner. So when SmartShield contacted me about reviewing their new self-tanning product, I decided to give it a whirl.
First, a little about SmartShield. They've been making eco-friendly sunscreens since 1995, perfecting their formula to assure a non-greasy, non-oily, environmentally friendly product. The self-tanner is new this season, and I would agree with that assessment-it is certainly lighter and less thick than most lotions. The smell is quite lovely-light, beachy, and not too coconut cabana, you know what I mean?
Another difference between this self tanner and other department store products is that it does not use dyes or stains to achieve a tanned look. It actually works with the melanin in your skin to give you a completely SAFE, completely REAL, NATURAL tan. It contains 15 SPF, and works best when applied as a sunscreen and exposed to the sunlight.
I've been using this product for a week, and my assessment? While I still prefer bed tanning, if I were to switch to self tanner, this would be the one I would choose. For those of you who oppose UV tanning for whatever reason, I would highly recommend this product. It goes on very nicely-no greasy feeling left behind, no rubbing in for hours to get it to absorb. I also have not one streak anywhere. While I think it is a tad more orange than UV tanning, it is so much more natural than any other self tanning lotion I have ever seen. I have very sensitive skin, and seem to be allergic to lots of lotions...not a single problem with the Smart Shield Self Tanner!
