If you are a parent, I'm sure you've heard of LeapFrog. LeapFrog is a company that puts learning first with educational games and toys to boost children's development. As a Mom, there is nothing better than a toy that your child wants to play with that is teaching them at the same time! We are big LeapFrog fans around here, we have several of their toys and enjoy them immensely.
Accordingly, I was very, very excited when LeapFrog contacted me about reviewing their Click N' Create Digital Camera! Not only do I get to explore a new product from a favorite brand, I have a little one who is obsessed with taking pictures...from both sides of the camera.
The only thing she likes more than posing for the camera is using one to take pictures. However, seeing as she is only going on five, she gets distracted easily. (Oh, look, a doll! Let me just throw your very expensive camera on the ground!) She has also inherited my klutziness, so her photography time with my camera is limited at best.
I actually considered getting her a camera of her very own this last Christmas, but did not come across one that I was happy with. All the ones I found were either way too expensive, too flimsy, or not from a brand I trusted.
I was impressed with the LeapFrog camera, manufactured by Sakar International, as soon as I pulled it out of the packaging. Lightweight, yet very sturdy. The rubber outer cover is sleek and smooth, but makes the camera impervious to scratches and scuffs. I feel like it would withstand a light drop or fall to the ground. As I said before, it is extremely lightweight...perfect for a toddler or a preschoolers grasp.
It is tall, but thin, making it very easy for small hands to grasp.
Figuring out how to operate the Click N' Create was extremely easy as well. To be perfectly honest, I didn't even read the directions. Anyone who is vaguely familiar with digital cameras will have no problem operating this and showing their children how to. There are only four buttons to navigate on this device-a power button that doubles as a menu button, a button that controls the flash on or off, a button that switches to review mode, and the actual capture button. The flash and review buttons double as up and down toggles once you're in review mode. Easy peasy.
It also has a 1.5" screen on the back for viewing. It definitely gets the job done, but leaves some quality to be desired. For your average five year old, however-it will work just great. My kids preferred the old school viewfinder, anyhow-made them feel more like official photographers.
My girls had a blast trying this out! They took literally sixty pictures over the course of an hour, and I had to bribe them to get the camera away! It held up like a champ, and they really liked the interactive options..everytime you take a picture, the camera says, "Great shot!" Every action is accompanied by a sound effect, and when you power off the camera, it says, "Bye bye!" The 3 AAA batteries required still had plenty of juice left after our picture taking session.
Pouting because she didn't want to give Sissy a turn.
The only thing I would watch out for is to make sure you are taking pictures in a very well lit area. The flash is extremely bright, so if you are close to the object you are capturing, the picture will turn out very overexposed.
However, in a well lit area, the flash is not necessary and I think the pics turn out pretty darn good for a kid's camera.
The camera also comes with some great software, the Click N' Create Photo Editing Software, that is designed to allow little people to edit and bling out their own pictures! With a little guidance, my five year old was able to navigate it with no problems, and I had to drag her off the computer for bed time this evening! Fun and teaching valuable computer skills at the same time-so great.
My review? I would definitely purchase this camera, and I am so thankful to LeapFrog for giving me the chance to review it! We had a great time and are excited to see what else the girls come up with, capturing their own memories! If you would like to purchase one, you can find them at Toys R Us with a retail price of $49.99.
Or, would you like to win one? LeapFrog has been awesome enough to offer up a Click N' Create Digital Camera to one lucky In Through The Out Door reader!!!
