If you're new to my little home here, you may not know that I am the proud mother to a premature baby. Katelyn, aka The Little One, was born almost two months early, at 33 weeks, and was a bruising 4 lbs. 5 ozs. You can read her entire story here.
Because of her struggle and triumphant recovery, I am a huge supporter of the March of Dimes. Their goal is to stop prematurity altogether. Millions of babies are born either premature, with birth defects, or sadly, do not even make it far enough to be born in the first place. Anything I can do to help this cause is what I'm going to do!
Every year, March of Dimes holds the March for Babies. According to the March for Babies website:
March for Babies is America’s favorite walking event! You’ll be joining 1 million people walking with their families or co-workers in more than 900 communities. Expect to run into some old friends and make new ones!
When you walk in March for Babies, you give hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year. The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. And it funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten our babies. We’ve been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible $1.8 billion to benefit all babies.
Now that is something I can get behind!! So, you may be asking, where are you going with this, crazy lady? I'm going here, kids....we're doing the March for Babies this year!! I created Team Bugga, named after Katelyn's nickname, to do some serious fundraising and some serious walking for the wee ones who need our help!
Team Bugga will be participating in the Seattle version of the walk, which will be held on May 2, 2010, and begin at Qwest Field. Registration is at 8:00 am, with the walk beginning at 9:30 am.
What can you do to help? I thought you'd never ask. You can check out our team webpage here, and either sign up to walk with us, or if you are unable, make a donation to support our team! I set the team fundraising goal at $250 but I think we can easily double that!!
And just to sweeten the deal...all walkers are invited to a celebratory BBQ at my house afterwards! We'll have a big ol' bash, beer is on me. Also, I will personally match the first donation that is made to our team! Who is going to clean out my wallet? Come on, I dare you!!
